How to Recover Storage Space After a Windows Update

How to Recover Storage Space After a Windows Update

Written by

in

I know the frustration of finishing a Windows update, opening File Explorer, and finding that the C: drive has less room than before. If you are wondering how to recover storage space after a Windows update, start with Windows’ built-in Storage settings. They show what is taking up space and let you review files before removing them.

The amount you can reclaim depends on the update. A major Windows upgrade may retain a copy of the previous installation so you can go back. A smaller update may leave temporary files or update cleanup data. Check which categories appear on your PC before assuming that an old Windows installation is the cause.

Check what is using your storage

Open Start > Settings > System > Storage and look at the space available on your main drive. Open Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations to see what Windows has identified. Note your free space before cleaning so you can tell whether the process worked.

Read each category instead of selecting everything at once. Windows Update Cleanup and Delivery Optimization Files may contain files you no longer need. Previous Windows installation(s) is different: it holds files associated with an earlier version of Windows and may occupy considerably more space.

You may also see Downloads and Recycle Bin. Those categories can contain personal files, so review them carefully. A cleanup screen is useful for finding files, but you still decide what to remove.

Use Cleanup recommendations first

In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Review the suggested temporary files, select the categories you want to remove, and choose Clean up. The options and amounts shown will vary by device.

You can also open Temporary files from the Storage page for a closer look at individual categories. If Windows Update Cleanup appears, review its listed size before selecting it. When cleanup finishes, return to Storage or File Explorer and check your available space again. Some cleanup work may take time to complete, so do not judge the result while Windows is still processing it.

Decide whether to remove a previous Windows installation

After a major upgrade, Windows may show Previous Windows installation(s). Removing it can recover substantial space, but it also removes the files needed to return to that previous Windows version. If the upgrade is recent, first make sure your apps, printer, Wi-Fi connection, and important files work as expected.

If you still need the option to go back, leave that category selected for later review. If you are satisfied with the new version, select it in Cleanup recommendations or Temporary files and confirm the removal. Use the Windows cleanup controls rather than trying to delete the Windows.old folder by hand.

Try Disk Cleanup if you need another route

Try Disk Cleanup if you need another route

Disk Cleanup offers a second way to find system cleanup categories. Search for Disk Cleanup from Start, select your main drive if prompted, and choose Clean up system files. Select the drive again, then review entries such as Windows Update Cleanup or Previous Windows installation(s) if they appear. Choose only the categories you intend to clear and confirm.

You do not need to run both methods on the same files. Disk Cleanup is most helpful when you prefer its category list or cannot find a particular option in Settings. If a category no longer appears after using one method, Windows may already have cleaned it.

Why did cleanup recover little or no space?

A routine update does not necessarily create a large previous-installation folder. Windows may also have cleared temporary files automatically. If neither cleanup screen shows much removable data, inspect the other categories under Settings > System > Storage. Large apps, games, downloads, and videos may explain the low-space warning better than the update itself.

Check the Recycle Bin before emptying it, and move personal files you want to keep to another appropriate drive or storage service. If you are clearing space while trying to fix a printer that shows offline when it is connected, avoid deleting printer software or drivers as part of the cleanup. If you use Storage Sense, review its settings for temporary files, Recycle Bin retention, and cloud-backed files before turning on automatic cleanup. That helps you choose a schedule that fits how you use the computer.

If free space keeps shrinking unusually fast, take another look at Storage after a restart and compare the category sizes. Avoid deleting folders inside the Windows directory based only on their names. Built-in cleanup tools give you a safer starting point and make the tradeoffs clearer.

Frequently asked questions

1. How to recover storage space after a Windows update without losing personal files?

Start with Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations and review the temporary-file categories. Leave Downloads and Recycle Bin unchecked unless you have inspected their contents. Remember that deleting Previous Windows installation(s) affects your ability to return to the earlier Windows version, even though it is separate from your ordinary documents.

2. Is it safe to delete Windows Update Cleanup?

Windows offers this category through its built-in cleanup tools when it identifies update files that can be removed. Review the category and let Windows handle the deletion instead of manually removing files from system folders.

3. Why can’t I see Previous Windows installation(s)?

It may not exist on your PC. That category is generally relevant after an upgrade that retained an earlier installation, and Windows may already have removed it. Look at the categories actually shown in Storage settings to find your available cleanup options.

A simpler way to keep space available

I would begin with a quick measurement, review Windows’ suggested cleanup categories, and measure again afterward. That tells me whether the update left removable files or whether I should look elsewhere for the missing space.

I would keep a previous installation until I was comfortable giving up the option to return to it. Once the new version is working well, Windows’ own cleanup tools make reclaiming that space straightforward.
